Over the weekend we were alerted to news that the Army’s Office of the Chief of Chaplains ordered priests not to read a letter from Archbishop Timothy Broglio, Archdiocese for the Military Services, USA, on the HHS mandate. A compromise was later reached forcing language in the letter to be edited.
“The Obama administration must view the Constitution as a cafeteria of liberties where they get to pick and choose what is on the menu,” said Catholic Advocate President Matt Smith. “It is clear freedom of religion and freedom of speech are not available at this time. Catholics have been told by the Department of Health and Human Services to violate their conscience and now the Army is ordering them to salute and keep quiet. An army officer attempting to silence faithful Catholics serving our country in the name of the Commander-in-Chief is an insult to the values those brave men and women are fighting to defend every day.”
We must join together to stand up for our Church.

Catholic Advocate today launched a nationwide campaign providing resources for faithful Catholics wanting to speak out against the recently announced Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) final rule affecting conscience protections in health care coverage. The ruling forces organizations providing health plans to cover contraception, abortifacients, and sterilization regardless of their religious beliefs. (more…)
Here are four powerful statements on the importance of conscience protections. One by the Holy Father the day before the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services issued their final rule mandating health insurance plans cover sterilization, abortifacient, and birth control and then three in response.
We at Catholic Advocate particularly appreciate the call to action by Cardinal-designate Dolan and Archbishop Gomez. You can click here to visit our action center to answer their call and join your voice with others upset about this attack on our Church. (more…)
We first sounded the alarm this summer, and today our worst fears were confirmed: The Obama Administration will force religious institutions to provide and pay for various forms of contraception.
They tried to offer a fig leaf to faith-based organizations by saying they have one year to comply, but make no mistake: Today’s decision by the Obama administration is just a stay of execution. People of faith must unite against this administration’s constant assault on our freedom and beliefs.
President Obama said that he wanted to find “common ground” with people of faith. (Watch for yourselves!) But allowing this decision to move forward sends a strong signal to people of faith; that door is closed. The Obama administration and its allies are attacking our values and our freedoms. They are committed to their agenda. The question is: Will we let them succeed?
Will you join us in rallying behind the Respect for Rights of Conscience Act authored by Rep. Jeff Fortenberry (R, NE-01)? We must send a message to those who attack the core of our founding principles.
Visit our Action Center right now and contact your elected officials. It will only take a minute, but it will make a longer lasting impact. Please ask them to support the Respect for Rights of Conscience Act. Then, share this post on your Facebook or other social media page for your family members and friends — and please urge them to do the same.
Members of the Catholic Advocate community who want very much to help with our mission — have been asking us what they can to do help. This is one of those opportunities. It’s an all-hands-on-deck situation.
The only way we can be victorious over this anti-freedom, anti-religious agenda is to join together in one voice by standing up for our beliefs.
For months now, Catholic Advocate has been alerting you to the attacks on our religious liberties in Washington, D.C. Now the House of Representatives Franking Commission – the entity that regulates how Members of Congress send mail to their constituents – is banning Christmas and Hanukkah Greetings.
Over the weekend, you may have heard from your constituents or fellow colleagues that the House Franking Commission will not allow Members to include holiday greetings, such as “Merry Christmas” or “Happy Hanukkah,” on their mail pieces and franked email newsletters.
The Franking Commission should not be in the business of limiting Members from addressing their constituents in the manner they chose and should certainly not be trying to enforce political correctness.
To address this matter, we are sending a bipartisan letter to Speaker Boehner and Minority Leader Pelosi along with Chairman Lungren and Ranking Member Brady of the Committee on House Administration asking them to revise these unnecessary rules. If the Senate can allow these specific greetings, why should the House not do so as well?
JOE WALSH, Member of Congress
MIKE ROSS, Member of Congress
Call your Member of Congress and ask them to sign the Walsh/Ross letter – Capitol Switchboard: 202-224-3121
E-mail the Franking Office and encourage them to let Members of Congress include holiday greetings in their constituent correspondence.
In his commencement address at Notre Dame on May 17, 2009, President Obama called for an unprecedented common ground for those with differing beliefs, but his actions have undermined that hopeful sentiment. Watch the video below to learn more.
