A Vote for H.R. 2 is a Vote for Life

Catholic Advocate to Score Vote on H.R. 2 for 2012 Voter Guide

WASHINGTON – Catholic Advocate Voice urges members of the U.S. House of Representatives to support H.R. 2 which would repeal and replace the “Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act” (PPACA).

For Catholics, a key part of the vote will be consideration of H. Res. 9, which instructs relevant House Committees to replace PPACA with legislation that achieves certain goals including to “prohibit taxpayer funding for abortions and provide conscience protections for health care providers.”

“The first tenet of any health care reform should be ‘do no harm’ and that begins with the unborn,” said Matt Smith, Catholic Advocate Voice Vice President. “Affordable health care reform is important but not at the cost of the funding in this bill that can be used to destroy innocent human life.”

Catholic Advocate, Catholic Advocate Voice’s affiliate organization, will score the vote on H.R. 2 as the first vote to be featured in the 2012 Catholic Advocate Voter Guide.

“We encourage faithful Catholics to actively participate in the political process to support elected officials and policies that remain consistent with the teachings of the Catholic Church,” added Smith. “The 2010 election was a wake-up call to both major political parties that their constituents are paying attention and are entering the voting booth educated.”

Additional Background:

The Catholic Advocate Voice Action Center was activated on January 4th following the introduction of H.R. 2 allowing people to directly contact their Member of Congress urging them to support the legislation.

On March 23, 2010, the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops (USCCB) said:

“Nevertheless, for whatever good this law achieves or intends, we as Catholic bishops have opposed its passage because there is compelling evidence that it would expand the role of the federal government in funding and facilitating abortion and plans that cover abortion. . . . If this new law is intended to prevent people from being complicit in the abortions of others, it is at war with itself.”
