Senator Demonstrates Leadership on De-Fund Planned Parenthood Fight
Even though the votes are stacked against passing legislation in the Senate this Thursday to de-fund Planned Parenthood, Senator Roy Blunt (R, MO) is taking the opportunity to educate his colleagues about Planned Parenthood’s use of our tax dollars.
Below is language from a letter sent today by Senator Blunt to the other ninety-nine Senators encouraging them to de-fund Planned Parenthood.
Catholic Advocate applauds Senator Blunt’s leadership on this significant issue of protecting life in our federal spending policies.
We encourage our community to send Senator Blunt praise for his effort.

Text of Senator Blunt’s Planned Parenthood Dear Colleague Letter:
April 13, 2011
As Chair of the Senate Values Action Team, I urge you to support the upcoming vote to strip Planned Parenthood of its taxpayer funding. The American people have called on Congress to end the reckless culture of runaway deficits. Cutting unwarranted taxpayer subsidies to the largest abortion provider in the country is an important next step in this fight.
Misinformation continues to circulate in this debate. I am writing to ensure that you have the facts about Planned Parenthood and its affiliates.
Planned Parenthood is the largest abortion provider in America. Planned Parenthood reported that in 2009 it performed 332,278 abortions nationwide, more than one-fourth of all abortions performed in the United States that year. While abortion patients constituted 12 percent of all Planned Parenthood clients, 98 percent of Planned Parenthood’s services to pregnant women were abortions. For every adoption referral Planned Parenthood made, it performed 340 abortions.
Planned Parenthood’s adoption referrals have decreased and abortions have increased during the last decade. Planned Parenthood’s funding increased from $202 million in 2000 to $363 million in 2009. In 2000, Planned Parenthood performed 197,070 abortions while making 2,486 adoption referrals. In 2009, Planned Parenthood performed 332,278 abortions and made just 977 adoption referrals. The 80 percent increase in taxpayer funding coincides with a 69 percent increase in the number of abortions and a 61 percent decrease in the number of adoption referrals.
Planned Parenthood has failed to protect the women and young girls to whom they provide services. Planned Parenthood employees have been caught on tape displaying a willingness to turn a blind eye toward the exploitation of underage girls and young women. At this moment, Planned Parenthood is fighting a bill in Illinois that would require its staff and volunteers to report the suspected sexual abuse of minors. Planned Parenthood has consistently fought parental notification laws all the way to the Supreme Court and has opposed state efforts to impose the most basic health and safety regulations on abortion facilities.
Planned Parenthood is an independently wealthy entity. According to its latest annual report, the organization has nearly one billion dollars in net assets. The data show that over the last nine years, Planned Parenthood has taken in over $500 million in profits.
Planned Parenthood neither needs nor deserves taxpayer funding. Please join me in standing up for women, unborn children, and taxpayers by supporting efforts to privatize Planned Parenthood.
